What does your typical work day involve?

Typically, I work in the office from 8 to 5. I work with a team as well as individually.

What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

During a work term with Petro Canada I was lucky enough to see the Terra Nova FPSO while she was being constructed. That greatness wowed me, I got hooked on oil and gas in our province and all we (Newfoundland and Labrador) could offer the industry.

When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM?

No time in particular. I never knew that engineering was an option for me growing up which was a shame. It took me a few extra years to figure out what I wanted to do. I wanted to ensure no girl (or boy) didn’t have the opportunity to realize all there is out there to do.

What were your favorite subjects in school?

Math was my very favourite.

What advice would you give girls, who are still in school, who might be considering a career like yours?

There is nothing you can not do! If you want something, go for it!

Why do we need more women in skilled trades and STEM?

We need more women everywhere. We add balance and diversity to the job. Diversity is the new hip word all industry seems to be promoting, why is that? It’s because diversity ensures that the company ‘sees all angles’ and they are more successful.

Who was your role model? What about this person inspires you?

There was a woman on my first work term in the oil and gas industry and I thought she was the best! Her name was Heidi and she is from Norway. She was super smart and made an impression on me! I haven’t seen her since, but I ended up in the same industry and now we both work for the same company. Hoping one day to see her again before she retires.

What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?

I love hanging out with my family. Going on walks and new adventures. I also love to stay active by participating in softball and soccer.

What superhero do you relate to most? Why?

I am not much into superheroes when it comes to the fictional characters, but I do relate to a lot of the other “heroes” out there. The ones balancing a successful career and a healthy family life.

Anything else you wish to share?

It is extremely important for all kids (girls and boys) to know the opportunity that exists out there for them. The sky is definitely the limit!
