What does your typical work day involve?

Primarily office based, with ongoing communication and interaction with external regulatory government agencies and stakeholders. Pre, during and post operations I can be required to visit to field locations (vessels, drilling rigs, etc), this would require local or international travel. As part of the Safety and Sustainability Unit my main focus is on planning and supporting exploration drilling activity. This can involve work within the organization to develop and implement environmental and regulatory requirements, however is primarily an individual task originated position. If support is required there is a team of experts within the organization to reach out to.

When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM?

I think I have always been attracted to pushing myself to achieve what others may not want. I have always been a hands on person who has the mind set to know how and why things happen- be that biologically, systematically and all the in between processes.

What were your favorite subjects in school?

Biology, Earth Science and language arts.

What advice would you give girls, who are still in school, who might be considering a career like yours?

So many doors are open to you today, and there are so many levels of operation that allow companies and processes to function. Look a little outside the box with your career choice as the secondary education you gain will give you the stepping stone to ensure opportunities are there for you. Start with your passion and keep positive that every step happens exactly as it should.

Why do we need more women in skilled trades and STEM?

Diverse work places can only result in positive evolution forward. No two minds think the same, no matter male or female, different views are key to success. Woman are an absolute presence that can offer new views and approaches perhaps lacking in a male dominated workspace.

Who was your role model? What about this person inspires you?

First and foremost my Mother. A single mother who raised four children on her own. She never turned away from the things we needed done as a family, she was the one I watched and learned from, the one who showed me to stay strong and focused even when its hard. My career hasn't always been easy and I often found myself in spaces I questioned in the moment, but everything has taken me to be exactly in a career I love.

What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?

Anything outdoors! My boys, husband and I love to hit the trails, go camping, fishing, adventuring! Health and fitness is a passion of mine, as is creating a positive balanced space for my family to embrace. I love learning about natural and holistic living, creating yummy healthy-ish food, drawing, wood working, and have recently become a honey bee keeper!

What superhero do you relate to most? Why?

Captain Planet! For the obvious reasons!

Anything else you wish to share?

Never stop pushing to be exactly who you are, never listen to someone else tell you what you should do with your life. This is your path, make it count!
