Get To Know Me

What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

I love my profession because it brings together my two greatest passions: design and the environment. Landscape architecture is unique in that it requires you to design for both the present and the future—often envisioning how spaces will evolve over the next decade. It works with dynamic natural systems to enhance the environment, enrich public spaces, and promote healthy lifestyles and outdoor activity. From concept sketches to parks, trails, and residential gardens, this field offers a diverse range of creative opportunities.

What was the best advice you have been given?

The best advice I’ve ever received came from my mentor, who has been a constant source of support and guidance as I’ve grown into my role. As a woman in a male-dominated industry—especially out in the field on construction sites—his words have meant a great deal. He always reminded me: You are the expert on site. He encouraged me to trust my knowledge, never doubt my abilities, and to understand that it’s okay not to have all the answers. It’s far better to admit you need to do some research than to say something just to appear confident. Asking for help is not a weakness—we're all still learning, and that’s part of the process.

What is a common misconception about your field of work?

A common misconception about landscape architecture is that it’s just about designing gardens. While selecting plants suited to a site's specific conditions is part of what I do, the profession encompasses so much more. Landscape architecture involves the design of nearly everything outside a building’s walls—from planting and pathways to parks, trails, outdoor plazas, venues, and streetscapes. It also includes critical systems like stormwater management, green infrastructure, urban design, recreational spaces, and sustainable site planning. It's a multidisciplinary field that shapes how we experience and interact with the outdoor environment.

In what ways are you able to be creative and innovative in your role?

My job constantly fuels my creativity, which is why I love it so much. As an artist at heart, I’m drawn to the creative freedom this profession offers. On any given day, I might be hand-sketching ideas or building digital 3D models to help clients visualize their spaces. I use tools like AutoCAD and SketchUp to design everything from parks to children's play areas. Every part of my work revolves around creativity and thoughtful design—and what makes it even more rewarding is knowing that, in the process, I’m also contributing to a healthier, more beautiful environment.
