What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

I love my profession for so many reasons. It is challenging, fun, creative, and rewarding! But most of all of love the people. Working with a highly skilled team to successfully deliver a variety of different projects from the initial planning, to the detailed design and construction is the most rewarding experience. I chose to be an engineer because the opportunities are endless!

When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?

"I always loved math and the sciences. But I never knew growing up that engineering was even an option until I had a conversation with my math teacher in Grade 12. Following that conversation, I met with my guidance counsellor to discuss potential career paths. I did a couple of career aptitude tests and engineering was in the top three. I decided at that point in time that was what I was going to do, still not really knowing what engineering was all about. But luckily for me, it was the right decision. I found a profession that I am truly passionate about!"

Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?

We need more women in STEM and skilled trades because they give us a different perspective. They can help us see why an equal combination of women and men can lead to a workplace that is more creative and innovative which may lead to better results, but more importantly, more fulfilled and satisfied employees and societies.

What would you be looking for during an interview for an entry level position?

When interviewing for entry-level positions the top five things that I evaluate are: 1) Communication Skills - how they present themselves and their goals. Good communication skills are a must for any job. 2) Positive Attitude - one of the most important skills that a person should have is making a good impression on an employer with a positive attitude. 3) Adaptability skills - how they have the ability to adapt in any given situation and to make the most of it. 4) Problem-Solving Skills - how they approach job-related challenges. 5) Strong Work Ethic - people with a strong work ethic are considered gems by employers as they have a sense of understanding towards their responsibilities and are willing to do whatever they need to do to get the job done.

What was your first job? What skills from it continue to help you in your current role?

"My first job was as an outreach coordinator assistant at a long-term care facility. I was responsible for planning daily activities for seniors. It truly was an amazing experience. The skills that I learned from this first job were invaluable. I learned that enthusiasm is key. Be enthusiastic in whatever you do, whether it is at work, at school or at home. It helps you stay energized and focused. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are initiators that help you learn many things. Pay attention to the details. Every small aspect counts and is important to learn them. Carry a notepad or notebook everywhere to write down all the aspects and important points you are being taught."

What do you do when you feel stuck?

When I feel stuck I always take some time to focus on the "why" I feel this way. Only you know what it feels like for you, and the reasoning behind it. Once I have that conquered I then figure out ways to get rid of the roadblocks. This could mean improvements to my mental, physical or emotional well-being. It really depends on the situation.

What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?

I love spending time with my three kids and my husband. We love to spend time as a family watching movies, going on adventures, and just enjoying each other’s company. I also love running and reading.

What advice would you give to your younger self when looking at career options?

My advice to anyone considering a career in the STEM field is to figure out what YOU want and go for it! Seek out opportunities to learn about what a career in STEM is all about. Whether it is job shadowing, summer camps, mentoring programs, school activities, research etc. This will give you a better understanding of the industry and if it is something you might be interested in.

Additional Info

Be curious, try new things, challenge the status quo and don’t be afraid to voice your opinion. And if a career in STEM is what you are interested in, go for it and don’t look back!
