Get To Know Me

What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

I love that every day is different. Every day I'm solving a new problem, and at least once a week I learn something new! I chose this career because of the above - I love solving problems and being challenged.

When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?

I was always good at math and science, so I'd say from a pretty young age I knew I wanted to work in STEM, but back then we didn't really have a word for it!

What was your first job? What skills from it continue to help you in your current role?

My first job was coaching 5 year olds in baseball. It taught me to embrace the chaos! And to stay as organized as possible to keep myself grounded. It also taught me that work can be fun!

What does your typical workday involve? Can you work remotely? (indoors/outdoors, office/plant, travel time, teamwork/solo work)?

I currently work remotely, and it's definitely one of the best perks of being a developer. You're not tied to just the jobs that physically exist in your city or province. Typically my day starts with a quick team meeting, then jumping into whatever tasks are on my plate. This could include coding a new feature, designing a new feature, reviewing someone else's code, or helping a teammate with a problem they're facing!

What is an app on your smart phone that you couldn’t live without?

My Finch app. It's like a little mental health pet meets to do list. Mine is named Gizmo, and she goes on adventures when I knock off something on my list and grows and learns!

What advice would you give students who might be considering a career like yours? What advice would you have given your younger self?

I'd say to go for it. It might be hard, but it's worth every minute. Also, embrace the learning process. School might seem really hard and exams are always looming, but the more you try and retain the more fun you'll have. I'd tell my younger self that what you choose now, doesn't have to be what you do for the rest of your life. I've had 3 different careers since I've finished my undergrad. Every job and thing you do creates a skill that can be transferred to a new one!
