What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?
I love designing experiments and thinking of new and different ways to answer questions important to society and the health of the ocean. I chose this career because I grew up on the water and I am at my happiest thinking about all of the complex processes that occur in the ocean hidden beneath the waves. The ocean holds the least explored places on Earth. There are still chances of seeing something that no one else has seen before or thought about before. It holds the greatest potential for discovery.
When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?
I always knew that I loved the ocean and wondered about all of the organisms beneath the surface. I had so many questions and science was the path that led me to the answers to all of those questions.
Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?
When we think of diversity we often think about how it benefits the new people coming into the field but in reality, the people bring different experiences and perspectives. STEM has generally been dominated by people with similar backgrounds, experiences and educations.
How do you think the school you went to influenced your career?
My favorite subjects were science and math. I wasn't exceptionally gifted like some of my peers but I worked hard and asked a lot of questions.
What does your typical workday involve? Can you work remotely? (indoors/outdoors, office/plant, travel time, teamwork/solo work)?
My work has a bit of everything. Many days I am in the office writing, reading or meeting with people about new and exciting research opportunities. Pre-COVID I traveled 3-6 months a year. I travelled all over the world for research and meetings. My research program works on projects all over the world, from Logy Bay to Placentia Bay to Nain Bay and Northern Labrador, the Arctic, the Antarctic, the Gulf of Mexico and even South Africa. We collect samples from the most remote pristine oceans to tropical beaches and even storm water drains.
Who is your role model? What is it about this person that inspires you?
I have numerous role models. I find the things that I respect in mentors, colleagues and friends and try to learn from their example.
What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?
I enjoy family movie night, hiking, cooking and gardening.
