What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

In my job, I get to use computer software to run simulations and then assess the data to understand the results. This work makes me think critically and problem-solve to make decisions related to the design of our oil production systems. I enjoy getting to challenge myself while also working closely with a team every day.

When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?

I realized I wanted to work in STEM when I participated in the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Summer Student Employment Program when I was in 11th grade. Here, I got to work as a waste plastic research assistant while also getting exposed to different STEM-related careers by participating in tours and job shadowing other program members. It opened my eyes to the vast range of career paths one can take in a STEM-related field.

Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?

STEM and Skilled trades-related careers are some of the fastest growing in the world, and the demand for them is increasing. These industries offer a large variety of exciting opportunities that females should not miss out on these fulfilling careers due to gender misconceptions. Women bring different perspectives to the workplace and have the potential to make a significant impact on the industry.

Does your work make a difference in people’s lives and the world?

My work makes a difference in people's lives by delivering what is needed to produce sufficient energy that we as humans use every day for heat, electricity, transportation etc. Oil production will be needed as we transition to a world that will rely heavily on renewable energy to progress to a net zero-carbon emission society. Who is your role model? What is it about this person that inspires you?

As a hockey fan, I have always looked up to Hayley Wickenheiser. She was the first female to play in a men’s professional hockey game. By showing courage and passion she has proved that women are just as capable as men. She is an excellent example for females to pursue their dreams, no matter how challenging it may seem.

What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?

I have a passion for travelling and experiencing different cultures in the world! I also being active by hiking, running, playing soccer and squash. I am a big foodie and love trying new restaurants and food trucks around St.John's.

What advice would you give students who might be considering a career like yours? What advice would you have given your younger self?

If you show an eagerness to learn and work towards your goals you can achieve anything you put your mind to. There are many unique career paths within STEM, and there's no better time than the start of your career to get a range of experiences to find what's best fit for you. I believe it is important to be passionate about the career you choose so don't be afraid to try new things!
