What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?
I love working with my hands. I grew up working on vehicles with my father and found a passion for trade work as young as 6/7 years old. I tried welding in an OTT trades program and I knew then that's what I wanted to do. The science behind metal, how you can manipulate it, create something from a sheet of paper and it stands in front of you at the end of the day is so rewarding.
When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?
7 years old.
Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?
Right now we have a very very small percentage of women in trades across Canada, it's time we start building our numbers!
What does your typical workday involve? Can you work remotely? (indoors/outdoors, office/plant, travel time, teamwork/solo work)?
I usually travel for work now so usually I fly to a camp and do 10-12 hour shifts for 2-4 weeks at a time. Do our toolbox talks, talk about the full work scope, partner up gather tools and get to work. I rarely work alone.
Who is your role model? What is it about this person that inspires you?
My father and my boyfriend. Growing up doing odd jobs and working on anything with a motor with my dad was just so rewarding... My boyfriend is a JP mechanic and there's nothing better than to sit and listen to all the things he's done in a run of a day.
What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?
Hiking, snow shoeing, weight lifting, tinkering with cars.
What superhero do you relate to most?
Hmm.. I'm not sure but I like to think I'm a wizard of electricity when I'm welding.
