Get To Know Me

What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

"My profession aligns with my skillsets well. There is a great balance between the financial/accounting side of the role while I get great opportunities to be involved in the operational and strategic side of things. I went into the accounting profession because I loved numbers. Math was always my favourite subject in school and I loved solving numerical problems. Having that as my career made perfect sense. Getting my CA (now CPA) was a great stepping stone to a wide variety of possibilities in my career. I worked with Deloitte for over 10 years in their St. John's, Bermuda and UK offices. The opportunities to travel and live abroad aligned with my aspirations when I completed my CA. When I was ready to move home, opportunities opened with Fortis, then Newfoundland Power, and I love working in a Company that started here in Newfoundland."

What would you be looking for during an interview for an entry level position?

Someone who is passionate about what they do (whatever that is). Someone who is motivated and not afraid to ask questions. Someone who can think outside the box.

What is a common misconception about your field of work?

That you just "crunch" numbers all day. Very little of my days now involve numbers. CPAs are well known for their great strategic minds and much of my time now is spent assessing and analyzing areas of the business to identify improvements.

What do you do when you feel stuck?

Taking breaks is essential for me. Hardly a day goes by that I do not leave the office at lunchtime for a break. Exercise, getting outside and spending time with my kids are also critical to my mental wellbeing and helps to create that space you need when you're stuck.

Tell us about some great organizations or programs that students might want to get involved in!

In University I was heavily involved in SIFE (now Enactus). Most University/College campuses have a team. Although largely business-focused, being involved with this organization was by far the best thing I did at University. I met the greatest people, learned so many new skills and all while actually making a difference.
