Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?

"We need more women involved in making decisions that impact women! Read about the invention of the seat belt, for example. Moreover, women represent ~ 50% of the population, so why not 50% of the workplace - regardless of industry? Women bring a different perspective and leadership style - proven to lead to more innovation and better business outcomes. We have the power to increase the size of the pie for everyone!!"

What would you be looking for during an interview for an entry level position?

"Growth mindset!! Having the desire to continuously grow, ask questions and challenge yourself is key. At the entry-level, you aren’t expected to have all the answers, but you are expected to be curious and committed. The desire to learn is very important."

What is a common misconception about your field of work?

"I work in tech and have my own tech-based start-up, yet I have zero ‘technical’ training. The technology industry is filled with opportunity that goes well beyond software engineering and development. At Mysa, for example, our Marketing team is huge! A common misconception is that you’ll feel like an outsider if you aren’t a ‘techie’ and that is simply not the case. I’ve learned so much about technology development during my time in the industry."

What is an app on your smart phone that you couldn’t live without?

"Audible! I absolutely love listening to books while going on long walks. Apple Podcasts is another big one. I am a huge podcast follower as well."

What advice would you give students who might be considering a career like yours? What advice would you have given your younger self?

"Be open to embracing a challenge. Strive to push yourself outside your comfort zone - it’s the best way to learn. Also, don’t be afraid to fail. The fear of failing prevents you from trying things that could change your trajectory significantly. I wish I had embraced failure in my younger years."

Sharing our stories and encouraging each other is so important. A rising tide lifts all boats and if we continue to support one another we will preserve challenging gender inequity in under-represented fields.
