What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?
I grew up on the farm I now own and operate. It was my grandfathers farm and I have been falling asleep in the tractor since I was two. Growing food is my passion and I love sharing that with others.
When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?
I was born into farming. I did leave the farm to pursue a career in Child Psychology. I lost myself in the process. I returned to the farm, found myself and started to raise my family the way I was raised. Best thing I ever did.
What was the best advice you have been given?
My grandfather said if I was to go into farming, I had to do it on my own...no partners. So, the only thing stopping me, is me.
What is a common misconception about your field of work?
That my husband is the farmer. Yes he helps on the farm, I cannot do what I do without him. However, I was farming for many years before he got interested in it. I did teach him how to drive the tractor! Also, to farm you need to understand botany, the weather, soil, nutrients, bugs, diseases and mycelium. How it all works together to feed us.
What advice would you give students who might be considering a career like yours? What advice would you have given your younger self?
Plant the seed. I would have told myself to start farming sooner.
