Get To Know Me

What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

I love my that my profession has lots of opportunities to learn new techniques and skills, and that there always interesting projects and data to work on and learn from. I also enjoy that I work as part of a team with many other professions--other scientists, engineers, lawyers, accountants, communications and business professionals etc.

When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?

I noticed that I liked hands-on activities like Applied Science (eg. being out in the field or in the lab). I also really enjoyed research and problem solving. Geology and geophysics were very interesting to me as they require creativity and spatial thinking in 3D, and this appeals to my artistic side.

Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?

Women are dynamic thinkers, excellent problem solvers and we are entirely capable of working in STEM and skilled trades. We need the diversity that women bring to the workplace--and STEM will be stronger for it :)

What would you be looking for during an interview for an entry level position?

I would look for a candidate who is enthusiastic about learning, who shows responsibility and is eager to take on new challenges

What was your first job? What skills from it continue to help you in your current role?

My first job was working as a summer assistant for the Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association. This job taught me excellent organizational skills, the importance of teamwork and putting in your best efforts. I also observed how hard work and perseverance translate into personal growth and achievements.

What advice would you give to your younger self when looking at career options?

Try many things to figure out what you like. Don't be afraid of taking on something that is challenging--you can do hard things! And often what feels scary at first can bring growth and so many wonderful opportunities!!
