Get To Know Me

What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

I chose to go into process engineering as I really enjoy solving problems and working with my hands. I can not see myself in a job where I need to sit in front of a computer all day and process engineering jobs are often in processing plants or research facilities where running experiments and monitoring the process requires hands-on work.

When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?

I realized I wanted to go into STEM based on the fact that I enjoyed my science classes in high school. At first, I thought I wanted to do a degree in chemistry but after research into possible jobs, I realized engineering had a larger scope of opportunities.

Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?

When working on a team to solve complex problems everyone has a different perspective on the problem based on their personal experiences and background. The more diverse the group is the more tools the team has to solve the problem.

What does your typical workday involve? Can you work remotely? (indoors/outdoors, office/plant, travel time, teamwork/solo work)?

With the Co-operative engineering program at MUN, we alternate school and work terms. As you can imagine my days are very different depending on what term I am in, I am currently in a school term. While in school my days will often start off with labs where I can do hands-on experiments to apply the material I learned in class. In the mornings, I do not have labs I work on things for my extracurricular activities or study with my friends. In the afternoons I have classes and then in the evenings, I work on assignments and lab reports. In my last work term, I was working at a Nickel processing plant where my day was spent running tests to ensure plant health and then interpreting and communicating my data. My upcoming work term is in Germany doing medical research with a university.
