Get To Know Me

What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

I love the marine education aspect of my position as there is something very rewarding about seeing how excited visitors become with the wonders of the ocean. I also enjoy working with both graduate and undergraduate students in the field of marine biology and ocean sciences. I first became interested in fisheries sciences as an undergraduate student at MUN, this led to a graduate program at MI in fisheries development and further to a master's of marine studies. Through my work at both MI and OSC, I have gained experience in working both in the field and lab and now I use this background to inspire others in marine science through public education and school programs.

Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?

I feel girls are underrepresented in STEM and skilled trades. I see many female undergraduate students interested in the sciences but I feel many of the students get lost along the way and need that extra push or mentor to help guide them into the proper career path.

What does your typical workday involve? Can you work remotely? (indoors/outdoors, office/plant, travel time, teamwork/solo work)?

Typically I would be busy at the Ocean Sciences Centre running marine-based education programs, managing academic programs for graduate and undergraduate students, and assisting with Department reports and funding applications. Marketing our programs, research and facilities. Some days would be spent with our resident seals and all the other wonderful critters at the Centre.

What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?

Anything outside during any season. Reading is also one of my favourite activities.
