What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?
I love the wide range of tasks that the millwright trade offers. I am constantly learning which keeps me interested and engaged.
When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?
While working in my first career choice in Human Resources, I was not getting the satisfaction from my job and knew I needed something that challenged me more. I knew I wanted to work with my hands instead of sitting at a desk so I did some research and found that trades work caught my interest and I wanted to know more. I applied for a scholarship and was successful and got the majority of my program covered. I still love my choice to this day.
Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?
A diverse workforce is a competitive workforce. Without diversity, things stay the same and we do not progress. Women offer a difference point of very and sometimes different skill sets making things run more efficiently.
What does your typical workday involve? Can you work remotely? (indoors/outdoors, office/plant, travel time, teamwork/solo work)?
Currently, I have to travel to Labrador to a camp for a 2-week period, then 2 weeks home. Once on camp, we get a shuttle bus to our worksite and work inside a building installing machinery from 7-5:30 for 14 days straight. We always work as a team, usually 1 journeyperson and 1 apprentice.
Who is your role model? What is it about this person that inspires you?
I do not have one particular role model. What inspires me is seeing other women on the job site, breaking down barriers and gender bias, and normalizing that we as women are just as capable as men of completing any work task we set out to do and vice versa.
What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?
I enjoy going to the gym and keeping up with my fitness. I am married with 2 children so I spend most of my off time with them.
