I chose this career because I love using AutoCAD software. Working for a utility was the bonus I didn’t realize I needed. I am learning something new every day about power generation and distribution in Newfoundland and Labrador. To know the work that I do is contributing to providing reliable electricity to the province is rewarding.

I first realized I wanted to work in STEM when I participated in Techsploration with my Grade 9 class. I also got to participate in the “take your kid to work day” with my Step Father and he was a Safety Officer. Both of those experiences got me out in the field onto work sites. Once I put a hard hat and steel toe boots on for the first time I knew. I also grew up in a family of Display Fireworks Operators where we put off Canada Day Firework Displays. That was the start of my interest in challenging activities that were traditionally male-dominated.

We need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades because it broadens the talent pool and allows for diversity of thought. Women can bring a completely different perspective to the table. The more women that get into these careers the more accessible it will be the next generation. The role models I experienced 12 years ago encouraged me to choose a career in STEM and I hope to be able to encourage girls now who will later become role models too.

Definitely Math and Phys Ed. I enjoyed math the most and I had a great teacher Ms. Johnson.

My typical work day involves modifying and preparing engineering design drawings using AutoCAD software. We have a team of Drafting Technologists here at NL Hydro and for the most part we work on our own projects, but there are times we come together to complete a set of drawings. We do usually work from the office, but there are opportunities for Drafting Technologists to get into the field as well.

Some of my favorite things to do are: • Shoot Professional Fireworks • Travelling • Hiking • Rock Climbing • Target Shooting

If I could give any advice it would be to do a job search for positions you are interested in and take note of the qualifications required. Make sure you enroll in a program where you have an idea of what job possibilities are out there for you when you complete it. I’d also keep in mind if there is a location you want to live is there work available in that area or are you ready to relocate. Keep trying new things. You never know what hobbies/activities could lead you to a career you love. Finally, do not feel discouraged if you change your mind half way through a program, it happens to so many people. At the end of the day make sure you’re doing something you love.

Shatter stereotypes. Don’t let anyone tell you can’t do something because you’re a girl.
