STEMforGIRLS empowers girls across Newfoundland and Labrador with experiences, career insights, and community connections that fuel their confidence and prepare them for successful futures in STEM fields. Through WRDC’s Educational Resource Centre (ERC), we offer hands-on learning and career exploration opportunities in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM), and skilled trades.

Since 2002, our programs have connected thousands of girls from urban, rural, and remote communities with valuable knowledge and experiences that shape their education and career choices.

Rural and Remote Focus

We recognize the unique challenges faced by students in rural and remote areas. With nearly half the population of Newfoundland and Labrador spread across a vast landmass, these students often face barriers such as limited access to extracurricular STEM programs, inconsistent STEM education, and fewer role models. That’s why we’ve prioritized outreach to rural communities, connecting students with opportunities that can unlock their potential.

Our commitment is to ensure every girl—regardless of where she lives—has the opportunity to explore, learn, and thrive in STEM. Our mission is not just about education; it’s about inspiring dreams, fostering innovation, and shaping the future for all communities.

Programs and Initiatives

Career Exploration Workshops

Through career exploration workshops across the province, students engage in activities like DNA extraction, mineral exploration, and coding alongside role models right in their schools. These events encouraged girls to think creatively and envision how their passions could positively impact their communities.

STEM Worksite Tours

Hands-on worksite tours offered students invaluable experiences at STEM workplaces. From mining conferences to helicopter facilities and robotics labs, students suited up in PPE and delved into real-world STEM environments, expanding their understanding of potential careers.

Virtual Engagement and Events

Bolstered by hands-on mailouts, our Learning Lab brings STEM learning directly to students. From geology kits to robotics modules, these experiences spark curiosity and build skills in a fun, interactive way that continues throughout the year.
