Who We Are
Hydro is the main energy provider for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. We power our families, friends, and neighbours in 200+ communities around the province.
Every year, we generate more than 80% of the electrical energy consumed by Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. And we take pride in knowing that 80% of the total energy generated for our industrial, utility, and 38,000+ residential and commercial customers across the province, is clean hydroelectric generation.
Our System
We operate nine hydroelectric generating stations (956 MW), one oil-fired plant (490 MW), four gas turbines (250.5 MW), and 25 diesel plants (66 MW). We also maintain 54 high-voltage terminal stations, 25 lower-voltage interconnected distribution stations, and thousands of kilometres of transmission and distribution lines.
We also use clean, renewable wind energy from two wind farms on the island: 27 MW from the wind project in St. Lawrence with NeWind Group Inc. and 27 MW from the project in Fermeuse with Elemental Energy.
We understand that a dependable source of electricity is essential to everyday life, from turning on the lights to boiling the kettle for a cup of tea. For more than 50 years, we’ve been there for our families, friends, and neighbours across the province.
