What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?
I love that no two days are ever the same. Every day brings a new challenge, and I enjoy solving problems and working with a team to find safe, practical solutions. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing a project come together and knowing the work we do has a real impact.
I chose this career because I was looking for opportunities that would challenge me, allow me to keep learning, and provide a rewarding career. I didn’t have a detailed plan when I started, but I said yes to opportunities, worked hard, and discovered a career that I genuinely enjoy.
When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?
I don’t think there was one defining moment. I realized over time that I enjoyed problem-solving, working in a hands-on environment, and being part of a team working toward a common goal. The more experience I gained, the more I knew this was where I belonged. STEM and skilled trades offer so many different career paths, and I found one that fit both my interests and strengths.
What does your typical workday involve? Can you work remotely? (indoors/outdoors, office/plant, travel time, teamwork/solo work)?
Every day is different, which is one of the things I enjoy most about my job. As an Offshore Construction Supervisor, I spend most of my time working on an offshore production platform. My day includes planning work, coordinating multiple teams, solving problems, managing risks, and making sure work is completed safely and efficiently. I regularly meet with operations, maintenance, drilling, and contractor teams, so teamwork and communication are a huge part of my role.
I split my time between the office and the field, where I can see work happening firsthand. While there is some paperwork and planning involved, I also spend time out on the plant talking with crews and supporting the work being done.
Because I work offshore, I travel by helicopter to the platform and work a three-week-on, three-week-off rotation. My job can’t be done remotely because being present to support the teams and respond to changing priorities is an important part of the role. It can be a challenging environment, but it’s also incredibly rewarding and has allowed me to build strong relationships with people from many different trades and disciplines.
What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?
Outside of work, I love staying active and spending time outdoors. Running has become one of my biggest passions, and I’m currently training for my first marathon. I also enjoy camping and travelling around the world when I get the chance.
I’m a bit of a book nerd and love getting lost in a good novel. I also enjoy baking, cooking, and trying new recipes to share with family and friends.
One of the things that’s most important to me is giving back to my community. I enjoy volunteering and finding ways to make a positive difference.
What is your favorite book? Why is it your favorite?
The Harry Potter series has always been my favourite. It’s more than just a fantasy story—it’s about friendship, courage, resilience, and standing up for what’s right, even when it’s difficult. Growing up, I always admired Hermione Granger. She was intelligent, hardworking, confident in who she was, and proved that knowledge, determination, and kindness are real strengths. Having a strong female character like Hermione to look up to was important to me, and she’s still one of my favourite fictional characters. The series is one I can come back to at any stage of life and always find something new to appreciate.
What advice would you give students who might be considering a career like yours? What advice would you have given your younger self?
Don’t let the fact that you may be one of only a few women—or the only woman—in the room stop you. Your ideas, skills, and perspective matter. Ask questions, stay curious, and never be afraid to admit when you don’t know something. The people who grow the most are the ones who keep learning.
If I could give advice to my younger self, it would be to have more confidence. I spent too much time worrying about whether I belonged when, in reality, I was more capable than I realized. Believe in yourself, take opportunities that seem a little intimidating, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.
