What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?
I love that I love going to work each day! Every day is an opportunity for me to learn something new. Some days I am flying in a helicopter to troubleshoot problems at a remote site while other days I am down inside a unit covered in grease from head to toe. I genuinely enjoy almost everything I do at work. Working with Nl Hydro has always been a dream of mine.
When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?
I chose this career after working with a construction company the summer after I graduated from high school. I knew I wanted to work with my hands and really get out there and see the world. I was positive I didn't want an office view each day. Enrolling in an electrical trade was the best thing I ever did.
Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?
We need more women everywhere. We add balance and diversity to the job. Diversity ensures that the company ‘sees all angles’ and they are more successful.
What does your typical workday involve? Can you work remotely? (indoors/outdoors, office/plant, travel time, teamwork/solo work)?
On an average day at Hydro, we start the morning with a tailboard safety talk in the plant at 7 am. Our supervisor then groups us into pairs and we are assigned work orders to complete for the day. The work orders often involve upgrades and preventative maintenance around the powerhouse.
Who is your role model? What is it about this person that inspires you?
I do not have one particular role model. What inspires me is people with ambition. Ambition can be defined as being eager or hungry to aspire and accomplish something; it is one thing I adore. When I read about people who are full of ambition I am quietly cheering them on from the corner. Especially those who have achieved a lot and continue to push for more out of choice. It keeps me going even when I don’t feel like continuing after having a bad day.
What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?
Any and everything outdoors. I am huge into hunting, fishing, ski dooing and atvs. When I am not at work you can find me in my backyard shovelling snow or mowing the lawn.
What superhero do you relate to most?
Batman! Unlike most superheroes, Batman does not possess any superpowers instead relying on his physical strength, intelligence, and obsessive passion. I feel he is the most human-like and relatable of all superheroes.
