Get To Know Me

What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

What I love most about my profession is the family-like atmosphere that we develop between our coworkers because of the experience they have and knowledge is top-class. Everyone looks out for each other and you have to give that trust back because working underground is a different world and everyone wants to see each other return home safe after two weeks. I chose this career because I was offered the opportunity to try something new with the underground training and ever since I've been so glad I've chosen this career path. I have never known how many people from Newfoundland there are in the mining industry. It was amazing to learn from them as a trainee entering this industry.

When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?

I always loved to see people driving the heavy equipment and always wanted to try it out.

Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?

More diversity in this industry.

What does your typical workday involve? Can you work remotely? (indoors/outdoors, office/plant, travel time, teamwork/solo work)?

12-hour shift with 2 weeks in and 2 weeks out. I mostly work with a development crew to further develop the underground mine at one of the two underground mines at Voiseys Bay.

What advice would you give students who might be considering a career like yours? What advice would you have given your younger self?

It doesn't matter what age you find your passion just go for it!

Additional Info

I would absolutely love to see more women in this industry! I love celebrating new women who choose to go into this industry, especially indigenous women.
