What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?
I’m passionate about all things weather and love the connection with the audience. Weather is part of our every day, knowing what’s going to happen and conveying that to the audience is the best part! And I get to do fun things.
When did you realize you wanted to work in STEM or Skilled Trades?
I’ve wanted to be a meteorologist since I was 5 years old.
Why do we need more women in STEM and Skilled Trades?
It’s important that we break the mould. Science is typically male-dominated but it doesn’t mean it should stay that way. There are lots of opportunities for everyone in STEM and skilled trades and resources like this one are a great way to get the word out there. Knowledge and representation are key.
What does your typical workday involve? Can you work remotely? (indoors/outdoors, office/plant, travel time, teamwork/solo work)?
My day varies depending on the weather or on location. I forecast throughout the day, provide radio hits to on the go, post on social media and then live at 6 pm.
Who is your role model? What is it about this person that inspires you?
I watched a number of TV meteorologists growing up and always wanted to be like them. I even contacted one station for a tour and shadow day to make sure this was something I really wanted to do.
What do you do for fun? What are some of your hobbies/activities?
I love being outdoors. Hiking, camping, canoeing, and fishing is what I enjoy doing.
What advice would you give students who might be considering a career like yours? What advice would you have given your younger self?
Most meteorologists find their passion for weather at an early age. It’s a science-heavy profession so make sure you take lots of science courses in high school.
