Get To Know Me

What do you love most about your profession? Why did you choose this career?

What I love most about being a welder is feeling productive, seeing the results of my work, getting dirty and the pay. I tried university and it wasn't for me. I also worked in customer service which also was not for me. I enjoy working with my hands, being challenged, making things, taking things apart and repairing them.

What was the best advice you have been given?

A man I worked with once said to me 'You do realize we (men) are all just 12-year-old boys'. I have never forgotten that! anytime I get frustrated or annoyed with my male colleagues, I think to myself 'They are just 12-year-old boys', I often repeat it many times!!

What does your typical workday involve? Can you work remotely? (indoors/outdoors, office/plant, travel time, teamwork/solo work)?

I usually travel for work and that includes remote job sites, staying in a camp, and being away from home. those work days are usually 12-hour days and can be dayshift or night shift. The time away from work can vary from one week to 28 days, two weeks on and two weeks off, depending on the job. I generally work as part of a team, but when welding it's just me and I love it!

What is a common misconception about your field of work?

That women can't do a trade! Totally not true. some of the best tradespeople are women. we seem to be more particular and detail-oriented, sometimes too particular. We are definitely better problem solvers.

What advice would you give students who might be considering a career like yours? What advice would you have given your younger self?

don't let anyone tell you that you can't do a trade or non-traditional job. you can do anything. I would strongly recommend trying a trade if possible at a local college, that way you get an idea of what to expect. what would I tell my younger self? Keep an open mind, and keep all options open, just because you are book smart doesn't mean that university is the only path to take; explore everything.

Tell us about some great organizations or programs that students might want to get involved in!
